Overview
This page is the technical reference for VCF Backup Storage Insight. Everything described here appears in VCF Operations once an adapter instance has been configured and a collection has completed. Two vendors are supported — Quantum DXi and Commvault Storage Targets — and the object model is shared, so the same dashboards, alerts, custom groups and relationships serve every producer.
Dashboards
All dashboards are shipped inside the Management Pack, are placed in a dedicated folder named after the product, and are installed automatically with the adapter content.
Backup Storage Health
The entry point for the repository estate. It lists every appliance with its health badge, system status, uptime and the capacity summary, and shows the active alerts scoped to the backup storage objects. A repository that has degraded or stopped accepting data is visible without opening a vendor console.
Backup Storage Capacity
Capacity view per appliance and per pool: total, used and free space, used percentage and the predicted days to fill. The pools are sorted by the days-to-fill metric, so the pool that will run out first is the first row of the table.
Backup Storage Performance
Throughput and deduplication view: write and read throughput, the deduplication saving and compression ratio, and the trend of both over the selected period. This is the dashboard used when the backup window is missed and the question is whether the appliance or the network is the bottleneck.
Backup Storage Replication
Replication state per partner: the current state (OK, error, paused), the replication lag and the comparison of that lag against the recovery point objective configured for the instance.
VCF Backup Storage Insight
The standard, self-service view of the adapter instance itself, present on every Management Pack: collection status, last collection time, object and metric counts.
Custom groups
| Custom group | Description |
|---|---|
Backup Storage World | Every object collected by the Management Pack |
Backup Storage Appliances | All appliance objects, grouped by vendor |
Backup Storage Pools | All pool objects |
Backup Storage Replication | Appliances and pools that have at least one replication partner |
Collected objects
The object model is vendor-neutral; no object kind carries a vendor name. The producer is distinguished only by the vendor property on each object.
Relationships
The topology is rebuilt on every collection cycle:
- the adapter instance is the root of the hierarchy
- an appliance parents its pools
- an appliance parents its replication partners
- a pool is related to the backup software storage target that writes into it, where the backup software reports one
- an appliance is related to its IP address objects, and to the virtual machines it holds copies of where the backup software exposes that mapping
The full path an administrator follows during a capacity incident is therefore Virtual Machine → Backup Server → Storage Target → Pool → Appliance.

Alerts
The Management Pack ships the following alert definitions. They apply to every supported vendor, because they are built on the shared object model.
Availability
- Appliance Not Reachable — the appliance does not answer the management API, Critical
- Appliance System Status Degraded — the appliance reports a status other than healthy
- File System Not Consistent — the internal file system is not consistent, Critical
Capacity
- Capacity Warning — used space above the warning threshold, Warning
- Capacity Critical — used space above the critical threshold, Critical
- Days to Fill Warning — the fill prediction is below the warning horizon, Warning
- Days to Fill Critical — the fill prediction is below the critical horizon, Critical
Performance and efficiency
- Deduplication Saving Low — the deduplication saving fell below the expected level
- Write Throughput Low — the write throughput is below the level needed for the backup window
Replication
- Replication Error — the replication state is error, Critical
- Replication Paused — the replication state is paused, Critical
- RPO Breached — the replication lag exceeds the configured recovery point objective, Critical
Events
The Management Pack raises VCF Operations events for the appliance events it reads from the device: system state changes, pool state changes and replication state changes. The severity of each event follows the severity the appliance assigns to it.
